Fishing in Southern Norway

Less well known to fishers than areas of Norway further north, the southern region surrounding the city of Kristiansand offers a variety of private salmon fishing options on the Topdalselva and Mandalselva rivers, in addition to numerous spate river systems. Easily accessed with direct flights from the UK, Kristiansand is a great base for fishers and non-fishers alike.

Boen Gaard, an historic manor house that is now open to private groups, can be found about 20 minutes away from Kristiansand. With the productive Tovdalselva running through the estate and accommodation for groups of up to eight, this is a beautiful home with recently renovated accommodation and superb private salmon fishing with ghillies.

There are self-catering options too, but Boen Gaard has a superb chef and a sommelier just waiting to spoil you.

For those looking for something a little more low-key, there are several other salmon fishing options within a short drive of Kristiansand and we were particularly taken with the Mandalselva. This is a classic salmon river, similar to the Spey in its middle reaches, divided into beats available for all and, importantly, also into private beats that may be reserved in advance.

Groups of fishers and non-fishers wishing to combine their trip with a cultural or culinary tour may wish to base themselves in Kristiansand itself. For these groups we work in conjunction with the Clarion Hotel Ernst in the centre of the city, which provides access to Kristiansand’s many attractions whilst still being well-placed for fishers in the group to reach their beats.

This part of Norway is a great option for those who love variety and, with the addition of numerous smaller spate rivers in the area, it is possible to fish several different rivers over the course of three or four days.

We work with well-known English guide, Ryan Marchese, now living in Norway, who provides an excellent guiding service for our clients including up-to-the-minute local advice and a package that includes lunch and transport. Ryan knows the area’s rivers inside-and-out and can advise which beats to book based on the current weather and fishing conditions.
