Owen River Lodge is situated in the middle of the Murchison and Nelson Lakes region of the South Island, in the heart of some of the best sighted brown trout fishing New Zealand has to offer.
The Murchison and Nelson Lakes region of the South Island offers an enormous choice and variety of rivers and over 25 are accessible within a 90-minute drive from the Lodge. It is also possible to fly into another dozen stunning wilderness streams.
The combination of experienced and professional guides with a luxurious fishing lodge with wonderful food and wine means that this is a lodge guests return to year after year.
The fishing in this region involves walking and wading upstream and fishing for sighted brown trout in gin clear water. This is skilled and technical fishing where using a good guide is the secret to success. The guides at Owen River Lodge all have over ten years’ guiding experience and will, regardless of your experience, enable you to better enjoy your time on the rivers and hopefully have a chance at a 10lb fish. The region offers everything from small intimate rivers like the Owen to iconic freestone rivers such as the Wairau. Trout range from 3lb to 6lb with some over the magical 10lb mark.
